The role of the maid as a reference for female gender identity

El análisis en este TFG se centrará en la noción histórica de que las mujeres han existido como posesiones legales de los hombres, siendo siempre relegadas a la esfera privada, y cómo esto ha sido retratado en la literatura estadounidense a través de las figuras de las criadas. Este TFG también examina la naturaleza del empoderamiento femenino a través de personajes cuyo rol es server y cómo los personajes, sin importar su lugar en la servidumbre, son capaces empoderarse y luchar contra su sociedad patriarcal. El análisis se realizará a través de un estudio de caso de la novela de 2009 Criadas y Señoras de Kathryn Stockett. Se analizarán diferentes temas a través de cuatro personajes principales que son: Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson, Constantine Bates, Yule May Crookle y otros personajes secundarios. Los temas analizados son: el valor de la familia y el amor, la importancia de la amistad, el conflicto entre el racismo y la educación, el papel de la clase social y la sociedad, y la religión. Se proporcionará un trasfondo para el autor, así como un resumen de la novela. También se intentará diseccionar a los personajes más importantes del libro, teniendo en cuenta sus personalidades, puntos de vista personales, su desarrollo durante la novela y cómo son capaces de empoderarse. La tesis concluye con una perspectiva diferente sobre el empoderamiento que se ha ido desarrollando desde el comienzo: las mujeres no necesitan ser situadas en una esfera elevada para ser o sentirse empoderadas. El poder puede venir de muchas maneras y puede ser alcanzado incluso por aquellas figuras fantasmales, olvidadas por la historia. Las criadas han sido esas figuras ocultas durante siglos. Al analizar su papel en la literatura, esta tesis destaca la importancia de las mujeres reales, las sirvientas reales, que inspiraron estas historias.

The analysis in this TFG will focus on the historical notion that women have existed as legal possessions of men, being always relegated to the private sphere, and how this has been portrayed in literature in the figures of female domestic workers. This TFG also examines the nature of female empowerment through female serving characters and how their characters, through their serving role, are able to reach empowerment and defy their own patriarchal society. The analysis will be conducted though a case study of the 2009 novel The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. Different themes will be analyzed based on four main characters who are: Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson, Constantine Bates, Yule May Crookle and other secondary characters. The themes analyzed are: the value of family and love, the importance of friendship, the conflict between racism and education, the role of class and society and religion. A background will be given for the author, as well as a summary of the novel . This part also attempts to dissect the most important characters of each book, considering their personalities, personal views and character development during the novel and how they are able to reach empowerment in their own way. The thesis concludes with a different perspective on empowerment that has been building up since the beginning: women do not need to be placed upon a higher ground to be or feel empowered. Power can come in many ways and can be reached even by those who are ghostly figures, forgotten by history. Female domestic workers have been those hidden figures for centuries. By analyzing their role in great literature, this thesis highlights the importance of the real women, the real female servants, who inspired those stories.
