Las nuevas tecnologías como fuente de apoyo social en la transición a la maternidad. Un estudio cualitativo

La transición a la maternidad es una etapa que conlleva unas exigencias físicas y psicológicas importantes en la mujer. El apoyo social informal facilita la adaptación a la maternidad, pero con frecuencia la madre encuentra que ni su grupo primario de apoyo ni los profesionales de la salud le aportan la ayuda que en ese momento necesita y acude a internet en busca de un nuevo apoyo social, el denominado AS informal del grupo de iguales en la red. Estudios realizados recientemente en Europa y EE. UU. han analizado el contenido de los posts publicados en sitios web, blogs y foros relacionados con la maternidad, pero no se han encontrado trabajos similares en España, país donde precisamente se encuentran las mujeres jóvenes de Europa más activas en la red. Este vacío teórico, junto con la importancia del apoyo social en el ajuste de la mujer a la maternidad, justifica la idoneidad y oportunidad de la presente tesis doctoral: Analizar el impacto que las nuevas tecnologías generan en las mujeres españolas ante su transición a la maternidad. Se ha realizado un estudio cualitativo exploratorio inspirado la teoría fundamentada. Como fuentes de información se han utilizado 3.045 posts provenientes de 85 foros distintos extraídos de los 5 sitios web más relevantes de parentalidad, seis entrevistas individuales abiertas a madres primerizas y una entrevista en profundidad a una matrona. La presente tesis muestra cómo en este proceso continuo y dinámico de búsqueda de su nueva identidad como madre, el apoyo social informal en la red que recibe la mujer española al dar a luz por primera vez puede jugar un papel fundamental. Un apoyo social tanto informativo como emocional y social, que les ayuda a alcanzar la difícil adaptación a la maternidad.

Transition to motherhood is a stage that poses very important physical and psychological demands on the woman. The informal social support is a well proven facilitator for women to adapt themselves to motherhood, but they frequently do not find that their natural primary support group nor the health professionals provide the kind of support they feel they need to cope with such situation, so they end up resorting to the internet in search of a new type of social support, denominated online peer support. Recent studies in Europe and in the U.S.A., have analysed the content of posts published in websites, blogs and forums related to motherhood, but no such studies have been found in Spain, a country where young women are at the top of Europe’s ranking on web usage. This theoretical vacuum, together with the importance of social support for a proper adjustment of the woman to motherhood, justifies the opportunity and the suitability of the present doctoral thesis: to analyse the impact of new technologies in women on their transition to motherhood. An exploratory qualitative study inspired by the grounded theory has been used. As sources of information, 3,045 posts from 85 different forums at the five most relevant websites on parenting have been employed, as well as six individual open interviews to first-time mothers and an in-depth interview with a midwife. This thesis shows how the informal peer support received online by the Spanish women when giving birth for the first time can be fundamental. This social support is informative as well as emotional and social, helping mothers to better achieve their difficult adaptation to motherhood.
