En abril de 2018, cuando Abiy Ahmed fue designado primer ministro por el EPRDF (siglas en inglés del Frente Revolucionario Democrático del Pueblo Etíope), la coalición de partidos en el gobierno desde 1995, Etiopía pareció abrirse a una posible transición. Sin embargo, la noche del 3 al 4 de noviembre de 2020 comenzaba un conflicto armado entre el gobierno central y el gobierno de la región del Tigray. El estallido de la guerra civil pareció truncar el comienzo de la transición y abrió un nuevo capítulo en la historia de la República Democrática Federal de Etiopía (RDFE).
In April 2018, following Abiy Ahmed’s appointment as prime minister by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the political coalition in power since 1995, Ethiopia seemed on track for a possible transition. However, on the night of 3 to 4 November 2020, armed conflict erupted between the central government and the government of the Tigray region. The outbreak of civil war nipped the fledgling transition in the bud and marked a new chapter in the history of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE).
