La apreciación colectiva de la santidad ha sido cambiante a lo largo de los siglos. El humanismo cristiano y la aparición del protestantismo trajeron aparejada la crítica a la idea de santidad y a las formas de veneración de los santos heredadas del medievo. El tratamiento de este tema por el Concilio de Trento vino a redefinir el concepto, que posteriormente se fue perfilando y poniendo progresivamente bajo la autoridad de las instancias creadas con este fin.
The collective appreciation of holiness has been changing over the centuries. Christian humanism and the emergence of Protestantism brought criticism of the idea of holiness and the forms of veneration of the saints inherited from the Middle Ages. The treatment of this issue by the Council of Trent came to redefine the concept, which was later outlined and progressively placed under the authority of the bodies created for this purpose.
