Development of an optimization tool for crude oil purchases

Este proyecto da respuesta a una empresa multinacional de refino en su intención de optimizar los beneficios. Después de analizar todas las oportunidades, el desarrollo de una herramienta mejorada de margen de crudo parecía ser una solución fiable, debido a que sus cálculos actuales eran ineficientes en tiempo, el número de crudos que se analizaban era insuficiente y la apariencia de los resultados para la toma de decisiones era mejorable. Por ello, se estimó que la optimización de la dieta del crudo suponía más del 60% de las ganancias totales estimadas.
El desarrollo de la herramienta se basó en los conocimientos actuales que la empresa colaboradora tiene sobre el refinado. Se consideraron más de 150 crudos a través de la base de datos disponible, y se obtuvieron los aspectos a considerar para la obtención del margen óptimo (como el azufre y la forma de obtener la mezcla). Los resultados del desarrollo de la herramienta fueron satisfactorios. Se ha desarrollado una herramienta que puede procesar varios crudos a la vez, fácil de usar y que puede realizar diferentes análisis de forma sencilla y con poco tiempo, que era el objetivo principal del proyecto.

This project provides an answer to a multinational refining company in its intention of profit optimization. After analyzing all the opportunities, the development of an improved crude oil margin tool seemed to be as a reliable solution, due to the fact that their current calculations were inefficient in time, the number of crudes that were analyzed was insufficient and the appearance of the results for decision-taking was improvable. As such, the crude oil diet optimization was estimated to result in more than 60% of the total profit estimated gains.
The development of the tool was based on the current know-how that the collaborating company has on refining. It considered more than 150 crudes via the available database, and the aspects to consider for obtaining the optimal margin (as sulfur and way of obtaining the mix) were obtained. The results of the tool development were satisfactory. A tool that can process several crudes at a time, easy to use and that can perform different analysis in a simple and low time-consuming way has been developed, which was the main objective of the project.
