El Papel de la Religión en los Discursos Populistas Occidentales Contemporáneos

La relación entre populismo y religión salta a la vista (Demarchi, 2014), y sin embargo se trata de un tema infrainvestigado en el área de las Relaciones Internacionales. Tomando como base las teorías generales del populismo y los pocos textos que tratan la relación entre ambos temas, el presente trabajo pretende determinar el papel que juega la religión en los discursos de algunas de las principales figuras populistas occidentales contemporáneas de derecha y de izquierda, averiguando si las referencias que hacen a la religión responden efectivamente o una ideología o se trata de una estrategia de márketing y tratando de averiguar si la religión se utiliza de manera sistemática. Para ello, se analizarán los discursos de Donald Trump, Santiago Abascal y Pablo Iglesias, comprobando similitudes y diferencias en sus referencias a la religión. En el caso de los dos primeros, además se compararán sus propias actuaciones con los valores de las religiones a las que dicen pertenecer y representar. Partiendo de que el retorno de lo religioso es un importante fenómeno político que de religioso sólo tiene el nombre (Corm, 2007), se pretende dar una nueva perspectiva al escaso estudio en el área, destacando la inclusión de un ejemplo de izquierda entre los casos analizados.

The relationship between populism and religion is obvious (Demarchi, 2014), yet it is an under-researched topic in the area of International Relations. Based on the general theories of populism and the few academic works that deal with the relationship between the two issues, this paper aims to determine the role played by religion in the discourses of some of the main contemporary Western populist figures on the right and left, ascertaining whether the references they make to religion actually respond to an ideology or to a marketing strategy, and trying to find out whether religion is used systematically. To this end, the discourses of Donald Trump, Santiago Abascal and Pablo Iglesias will be analysed, verifying similarities and differences in their references to religion. In the case of the first two, their own actions will also be compared with the values of the religions they claim to belong to and represent. Starting from the fact that the return of religion is an important political phenomenon that only has the name of religion (Corm, 2007), the aim is to give a new perspective to the scarce study in the area, highlighting the inclusion of an example of the left among the cases analysed.
