The Mendicant Orders and the Castilian Monarchy in the Reign of Ferdinand III

Las órdenes mendicantes se desarrollaron en Castilla en estrecha cooperación con la corona. Aunque la información que tenemos es insuficiente y, a menudo, legendaria, nos permite señalar la existencia de relaciones e intereses compartidos entre el rey y los frailes. Este capítulo se centra en las acciones del rey Fernando III y las analiza en dos áreas: en Castilla la Vieja y en los nuevos territorios castellanos ganados en el sur gracias al avance de la Reconquista. Las políticas del rey estuvieron estrechamente relacionadas con las de su madre, Berenguela I, y beneficiaron especialmente a la Orden de Predicadores. Como resultado, se estableció un vínculo especial entre la Corona castellana y los dominicos que perduraría en el tiempo.

The mendicant orders spread in Castile closely with the strong co-operation of the crown. Although the information we have is insufficient and often legendary, it allows us to establish relationships and interests between the king and the friars. This chapter focuses on the actions of King Ferdinand III and analyses them in two areas: in Old Castile and in the new Castilian territories won in the south thanks to the advance of reconquest. The policies of the king were closely related to those of his mother, Berenguela I, and especially benefited the Order of Preachers. As a result, a special bond was established between the Castilian Crown and the Dominicans which would long remain.
