Ports in transition : analysis of sustainable transition in different ports of Europe

Los puertos son puntos de intercambio clave en las cadenas de suministro globales. Simultáneamente forman parte de sus comunidades locales y regionales interactuando con ellas y teniendo un gran impacto en sus áreas. Por lo tanto, los puertos, como infraestructura presente en estas tres dimensiones (global, regional y local), tienen que responder a los retos que la situación mundial actual está experimentando. Los puertos tienen un increíble potencial para abordar diferentes cuestiones en las que las principales son el cambio climático, la digitalización de las grandes infraestructuras, la movilización global, la cooperación política y la integración social. El objetivo de este documento es analizar cuáles son las principales tendencias en materia de sostenibilidad portuaria y cómo se están aplicando y cómo se pueden poner en práctica en diferentes tipos de puertos. A lo largo de este documento explicaré cómo se han establecido los puertos en Europa y cómo están actualmente en transición hacia un futuro sostenible, qué indicadores deben seguir para ser más sostenibles y cómo su transición afecta a toda la industria marítima y a las relaciones con las ciudades y regiones donde se encuentran. Por último, compararé diferentes puertos de Europa analizando qué han hecho para ser sostenibles y qué les queda por hacer.

Ports are key exchange points in global supply chains. Simultaneously they are part of their local and regional communities interacting with them and having a huge impact in their areas. Therefore, ports, as an infrastructure present in these three dimensions (global, regional and local), have to answer to the challenges that the current worldwide situation is experiencing. Ports have an incredible potential in addressing different issues in which the major ones are climate change, digitalization of major infrastructures, global mobilization, political cooperation and social integration. The objective of this paper is analyzing what are the main trends in port sustainability and how are they being implemented and how can they be put into practice in different kind of ports. Throughout this document I will explain how ports in Europe have been established and are currently transitioning towards a sustainable future, what indicators they should follow in order to become more sustainable and how their transition affects the entire maritime industry and the relations with the cities and regions where they are located. Finally, I will compare different ports of Europe analyzing what have they done to become sustainable and what is left to be done.
