Living in the brothel : Participant observation inhidden contexts

Este artículo describe las dificultades en la investigación y aplicación de la observación participante en contextos ocultos y en comportamientos que son considerados tabúes o íntimos en las sociedades occidentales. Se realizó trabajo etnográfico en four brothels de prostitución femenina de cuatro ciudades españolas conviviendo con las mujeres y empleados de los brothels. Se reflexiona sobre aspectos que emergen durante el trabajo etnográfico: la selección y acceso a los espacios de interacción, los roles a desempeñar por la investigadora, los límites de la participación, los códigos legales y éticos, la aceptación de los informantes y el descubrimiento de los significados ocultos. En cierta medida el trabajo etnográfico es único y presenta algunos problemas de replicabilidad cuando las características del investigador pueden estar marcadas por el contexto. En conclusión, en los contextos ocultos e ilícitos será fundamental en rol que desempeñe el investigador y las relaciones de confianza y vínculos que establezca.

tThis article describes the difficulties of the research and application of participant observa-tion in hidden contexts and in behaviours that are considered taboo or intimate in westernsocieties. Ethnographic work in four brothels of female prostitution was carried out in fourSpanish cities, in which the author lived with the women and employees of the brothels.Aspects that arise during the ethnographic work are reflected upon: selection of and accessto the spaces of interaction, the roles to be carried out by the researcher, the limits of theparticipation, the legal and ethical codes, acceptance by the informants and the learningof hidden meanings. Managing to pierce hidden contexts and meanings is only possiblethrough participant observation with very close relationships of trust with the subjectsunder study, which is only attainable through daily coexistence.
