Para el Antiguo Testamento Moisés y Jeremías son los profetas por antonomasia. Jonás, por su parte, es el antiprofeta. Sobre todo, si se lee su libro en contraste con Joel, profeta fiel e intercesor.
Un acercamiento a textos del Pentateuco y de los cuatro libros proféticos mencionados nos permite concluir que la palabra, la vocación y la mediación o intercesión caracterizan a los profetas veterotestamentarios.
