San Pablo y san Ignacio: Perspectivas antropológicas compartidas

Es bien conocido que san Ignacio tenía una particular devoción por san Pablo, tanto por algunas similitudes biográficas entre ambos (una conversión tardía tras un pasado de ambición y violencia) como por sus afinidades teológicas y espirituales: la centralidad de la cristología, el extraordinario ímpetu misionero, la gratuidad en el esforzado trabajo apostólico, el padecer todo tipo de inconvenientes y persecuciones como parte ineludible del seguimiento, etc. Este artículo explora un campo específico de la teología paulina: la visión del ser humano, la antropología, intentando, con la vista puesta en su contexto cultural, comprenderlo con el trasfondo del mundo antiguo, y, al mismo tiempo, apuntar a los vínculos, evidentes, con la visión antropológica ignaciana. Pablo e Ignacio comparten la visión de una humanidad que sin la gracia de Dios está perdida y condenada al fracaso. Ambos consideran que la salvación de Dios implica al cuerpo, con el cual podemos servir a Dios. Tanto Ignacio como Pablo, y éste siguiendo modelos clásicos, creen que en el ser humano hay dos instancias decisivas que condicionan nuestra vida: una es la mente, que resume el modo como conocemos y entendemos la realidad, y que puede ser transformada para asemejarse a la «mente de Cristo»; y otra es el corazón, dimensión central de la persona, alimentada, entre otras cosas, por el espíritu entendido como fuerza vital y también como presencia de la divinidad en el ser humano. Esas dimensiones del hombre bíblico describen lo que podríamos entender como sujeto ignaciano. Los Ejercicios Espirituales ignacianos son un modo de actuar sobre cada una de estas instancias decisivas de la persona.

It is well known that St. Ignatius had a particular devotion to St. Paul, both because of some biographical similarities between them (a late conversion after a past of ambition and violence), and because of their theological and spiritual affinities: the centrality of Christology, the extraordinary missionary impetus, gratuity in their hard apostolic work, readiness to suffer all kinds of hardships and persecutions as an unavoidable part of the apostolate, etc. This article explores a specific field of Pauline theology: the vision of the human being, the anthropology, trying, with a view to its cultural context, to understand it against the background of the ancient world, and, at the same time, to underline the evident links with the Ignatian anthropological vision. Pablo and Ignacio share the vision of a humanity that without the grace of God is lost, and condemned to failure. Both saints consider that the salvation of God implies the body, with which we can serve God. Both Ignacio and Pablo, the latter following classic models, believe that in the human being there are two decisive instances that condition our life: one is the mind, which summarizes the way we know and understand reality, and that can be transformed to resemble the "mind of Christ"; and another is the heart, the central dimension of the person, nourished, among other things, by the Spirit, understood as a vital force and also as the presence of the Divinity in the human being. These dimensions of biblical man describe what we might understand as an Ignatian subject. The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises are a way of acting on each of these decisive instances of the person.
