LA RETRADUCCIÓN EN LA LITERATURA. ANÁLISIS DE DOS TRADUCCIONES DE "THE AWAKENING" DE KATE CHOPIN

La retraducción consiste en traducir un texto que ya se ha traducido anteriormente en el mismo idioma. Una misma obra puede tener varias traducciones y, de acuerdo con algunos profesionales de este campo, el objetivo de esto es actualizar su contenido o corregir los errores de las versiones anteriores. Para esto, los traductores emplean técnicas como la transposición, el calco, la adaptación, etc. Sin embargo, deberán tener en cuenta algunas dificultades, como la búsqueda de la documentación apropiada o la adaptación errónea de ciertos elementos. Además, hay distintas razones por las que se realizan retraducciones como, por ejemplo, porque la primera traducción se ha visto afectada por la censura, porque las competencias han mejorado o por motivos económicos, entre otros factores. Para averiguar esto, se han seleccionado dos traducciones de The Awakening de Kate Chopin con el fin de realizar un cotejo entre ambas. Así, se deducirá por qué se hizo una nueva traducción y si de verdad ha ayudado a actualizar y corregir la primera traducción. Tras dicho cotejo, se llega a la conclusión de que la segunda versión adapta algunos aspectos como el vocabulario, pero, en otros, no logra ese objetivo. Por eso, aprendemos una traducción nueva no implica una mejora en todos los factores.

Retranslation consists in translating a text that has already been translated in the same language. A literary work can have many different translations and, according to some experts from this field, the goal of this practice is to update its content and to amend the mistakes found in former versions. To do this, translators make use of techniques such as transposition, calque, adaptation, etc. However, they will have to take some difficulties into account, such as finding appropriate information or adapting some elements wrongly. We can also find other reasons that editors take into consideration when they want to publish a retranslation. This can be because the first translation has been affected by censorship, because translators have new resources they did not have in the past or because of economic reasons, among other factors. To figure this out, two translations of The Awakening by Kate Chopin have been selected in order to compare both of them. This way, we will know why this work received a new translation and whether it has helped update and correct the first translation or not. After this comparison, we conclude that the second version only adapts some aspects such as the vocabulary that is used. However, in other points, it does not achieve that goal. That is why a new translation does not mean it will improve all its elements.
