Dado que algunos dientes de la parte trasera de la boca tienen múltiples raíces situadas unas delante de las otras, cuando este tipo de dientes son radiografiados de forma perpendicular, las raíces delanteras pueden bloquear la visualización de las raíces traseras, por lo que no todas las raíces son visibles. Debido a esto, cuando estos dientes y sus raíces están siendo analizados, debe realizarse una radiografía adicional desde otro ángulo, la cual permitirá visualizar correctamente todas las raíces y conocer la posición correcta de cada una de ellas. Actualmente no existe un procedimiento para realizar estas radiografías desde otro ángulo de una forma calibrada y precisa, por lo que las radiografías que se hacen desde otro ángulo con frecuencia no muestran correctamente el diente o las raíces, lo que provoca que sean necesarias varias radiografías para poder visualizar correctamente el diente. En este proyecto se han desarrollado dos prototipos que permiten a los dentistas hacer estas radiografías de una forma precisa, con el fin, por una parte, de simplificar el proceso que se necesita llevar a cabo cuando se están analizando dientes con múltiples raíces, y, por otra, reducir la radiación a la que se expone al paciente.

As certain teeth of the rear part of the mouth have multiple roots which are right next to each other, front-to-back, when they are being analyzed with a straight angled radiograph, it is not possible to correctly visualize all the roots, as the roots in the front usually block the visualization of the roots in the back. When this type of teeth and their roots are being analyzed, an additional radiograph needs to be taken from another angle, which will allow correctly visualizing all the roots and knowing their correct position. The current method for taking these angled radiographs is not a calibrated or precise one, so when these angled radiographs are taken, they normally don’t correctly show the tooth or the roots, which makes the dentist having to take several radiographs until the tooth is correctly seen. Two prototypes that allow dentists taking these radiographs in a calibrated way have been developed in this project, in order to simplify the procedure needed to analyze teeth with multiple roots and reduce the patient’s exposure to radiation.
