State feminism versus autonomous feminism : The case of Tunisia before, during and after the Arab Spring.

El propósito de este estudio es analizar el feminismo estatal y el feminismo autónomo en el estudio del caso: El papel de la mujer antes, durante y después de la Primavera Árabe en Túnez. La hipótesis que se sigue es que después de la primavera árabe hubo una mejora en los derechos individuales, colectivos (civiles) y políticos de la mujer tunecina, a pesar de ser una mejora que ha tenido que hacer frente a múltiples fuerzas retrógradas.

Para analizar esta hipótesis, se expondrá y comparará una serie de cinco variables principales determinadas en el marco teórico, a fin de explicar el papel de la mujer tunecina antes, durante y después de la primavera árabe. Estas variables son:
- Legislación,
- Educación,
- Derechos laborales,
- Derechos políticos,
- Lucha contra la discriminación y la violencia de género.

Antes de comenzar la comparación, es esencial realizar un análisis de la historia de Túnez desde el siglo XIX hasta la Primavera Árabe, que proporcionara una perspectiva necesaria para entender algunos aspectos cruciales de la mentalidad de los tunecinos.

Una vez realizado este análisis histórico, procederemos a analizar las diferentes variables anteriores y posteriores a la Primavera Árabe. Concluyendo con la siguiente pregunta: ¿Fue la Primavera Árabe un hito en la historia de la mujer en Túnez?

La pregunta de esta investigación es si el feminismo impulsado por el estado (heterónomo) es una condición necesaria para el desarrollo del feminismo dentro de una nación, o si el feminismo puede desarrollarse como un movimiento social espontáneo sin necesidad de una dirección estatal-gubernamental (autónomo). El estudio del caso de Túnez y el estudio de las diferentes variables permitiría observar la evolución del feminismo durante el siglo XX y contrastar la información para responder a la pregunta principal de esta investigación.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the state feminism and the autonomous feminism in the case study of the role of women before, during and after the Arab spring in Tunisia. The hypothesis to be followed is that after the Arab spring there was an improvement in the individual, collective (civil), and political rights of Tunisian women, despite being an improvement that has had to face multiple retrograde forces.

To analyze this hypothesis, a series of five main variables determined in the theoretical framework will be exposed and compared, in order to explain the role of Tunisian women before, during and after the Arab Spring. These variables are:
- Legislation,
- Education,
- Labor rights,
- Political rights,
- Fight against gender discrimination, and gender violence.

Before starting the comparison, it is essential to carry out an analysis of the history of Tunisia since the 19th century until the Arab Spring providing some crucial aspects to understand the public mentality of Tunisians.

Once this historical analysis has been carried out, we will proceed to analyze the different variables before the Arab spring. Subsequently, the analysis of the parameters after the Arab spring will then be carried out. Concluding with this question: Was the Arab Spring a milestone for women’s history in Tunisia?

The research question is of this investigation is if the state feminism (as an heteronomous process) is a necessary condition for the development of feminism within a nation, or instead, if feminism develops itself as a spontaneous social movement (as a process autonomous from the state). The case study of Tunisia and the study of the different variables would allow to observe the evolution of feminism during the twentieth century and to contrast the information to answer the main question of this investigation.
