Los iraníes algo más que persas y chiítas

Irán es el heredero del legado histórico y cultural del Imperio Persa. Quizás por eso sea tan difícil analizar este país como un Estado más. Su mezcla étnica, religiosa y cultural ha hecho del Irán actual un ente mucho más complejo. Así, cabría preguntar qué es Irán y qué es ser iraní. Aunque a priori la pregunta pueda parecer un tanto naif, la respuesta no es tan sencilla. Una de las mejores respuestas la podemos encontrar en el discurso de la iraní Shirin Ebadi Premio Nobel de la Paz (2003) en Oslo: Soy iraní, descen­diente de Ciro el Grande. El Emperador que hace 2.500 años proclamó sobre su pináculo que no reinaría sobre aquellos que no le quisieran como mandatario . Sin embargo, dicha respuesta no estaría completa sin los elementos que aporta la explicación que dio el jurado para otorgarle el citado galardón: Shirin Ebadi ha hecho posible ser musulmana, demócrata, liberal, una mujer liberada, orgullosa de la herencia pre-islámica y comprometida con la paz en el mundo .
