La islamofobia :
definición y causas

La cultura española y la cultura islámica tienen una larga trayectoria histórica en común. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, los casos de islamofobia han aumentado en Occidente. El desconocimiento de la cultura del otro, el discurso negativo empleado en los medios de comunicación para dirigirse a esta comunidad, la visión estigmatizada de los árabes y musulmanes como «inmigrantes pobres» o el auge de los atentados terroristas yihadistas en España, y en Occidente en general son solo algunos, de entre otros muchos factores, causantes del auge de la islamofobia en nuestra sociedad. Tal vez, la islamofobia sea una respuesta irracional a acontecimientos tales como la crisis de refugiados siria. O, tal vez, la islamofobia sea un fenómeno que siempre ha existido y que se ha servido de acontecimientos como los mencionados para expandirse.
El cometido de este trabajo es el de reflexionar sobre la esencia la islamofobia y las causas que la generan con el fin de concienciar a la sociedad sobre la gravedad de la misma. En este trabajo, ofreceremos una breve perspectiva histórica sobre la relación entre la sociedad española y la islámica, analizaremos el fenómeno —sus orígenes, las definiciones sobre el mismo, posibles causas y hechos de los que se nutre— analizaremos qué medidas se están tomando para erradicar la islamofobia y qué legislaciones la contemplan, y, por último, aportaremos una serie de reflexiones propias sobre la definición del término «islamofobia» y las causas del fenómeno.

The Spanish and the Islamic culture have a long trajectory in common. However, in recent years, the number of cases of islamophobia have increased in the West. The lack of knowledge regarding the other’s culture; the negative speech present in the Spanish media employed to talk about the Islamic community; the stigmatization with regard to the Arabs or Muslims as «poor immigrants»; or the rise in the number of Jihadist terrorist attacks in Spain, and in the West in general; are only some of the many factors that are causing the islamophobia boom in our society. Maybe, islamophobia is just an irrational response to events such as the Syrian refugee crisis. Or, perhaps, islamophobia is a phenomenon that has always existed and which has taken advantage of recent events to spread.
The aim of this work is to reflect on what is islamophobia about and what it is caused by in order to raise awareness among civil society about the severity of the phenomenon. In this work, we will offer a brief historical perspective on the relationship between the Spanish and the Islamic culture; we will analyse the phenomenon —its origins, the definitions it has been given, potential causes and facts that could nourish it—; we will assess what measures have been taken in order to eradicate it and which legislations contemplate it; and, finally, we will add a series of thoughts on the definition of the term ««islamophobia» and on what could be causing it.
