La cuenta de conciencia al Superior es un instituto fundamental en el carisma de la Compañía de Jesús. hay que entenderlo desde la experiencia persona espiritual de San Ignacio de Loyola y su relación con los primeros compañeros que fundaron con él la Orden. Tiene fuertes raíces en los Ejercicios espirituales y a dirección espiritual, que parecen más claramente su fuente de inspiración antes que las reglas de institutos religioso anteriores. Las Constituciones de la Compañía marcan claramente la obligatoriedad de esta práctica y su aplicación al gobierno del Superior sobre el jesuita. Esta obligatoriedad se vio cuestionada por el CIC 17, y luego respaldada por un privilegio de Pío XI.

The account of conscience to the Superior is a fundamental institute in the charism of the Society of Jesus. It must be understood from the spiritual personal experience of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and his relationship with the first companions who founded the Order with him. It has strong roots in the Spiritual Exercises and spiritual direction, which seem more clearly its source of inspiration than the rules of previous religious institutes.
