Franz Kafka's Die Verwandlung and its Thirty-One Spanish Translations

Este capítulo es una primera aproximación a la obra La Metamorphosis de Franz Kafka en España. Por el elevado número de traducciones publicadas solo en España, treinta y una versiones, la primera pregunta que nos hacemos es como la obra ha sido recibida en el sistema cultural español desde su primera traducción en 1925. Para investigar esta recepción durante los últimos noventa años se han consultado varias fuentes como periódicos de diferentes épocas históricas, reseñas de libros o estudios sobre la obra y sus traducciones. Además, se ha hecho una búsqueda de las diferentes traducciones y ediciones por fechas. Esta información nos ha servido para llegar a conclusiones teniendo en cuenta la perspectiva del libro en el que se adopta una perspectiva sistemica en la cual se considera que existe una relación entre el texto original y sus diferentes traducciones y su contexto socio-histórico y cultural y viceversa. Esta relación nos ayuda entender la apreciación de un autor, su obra y su cultura en una cultura determinada, en este caso España. En este capítulo empezaremos con un enfoque contextual para analizar la evolución histórica de las traducciones de Die Verwandlung de Kafka para proceder a continuación a un análisis sistemico considerando la influencia recíproca de esta obra.

This chapter aims to be a first approach to Franz Kafka s Die Verwandlung [Metamorphosis] in Spain. Due to the extremely high number of Spanish translations located, thirty-one different versions, the first question that arises is about the reception that this work had since the publication of its first translation in 1925 up to the present day in the Spanish culture system. In order to examine the reception during the last ninety years, background information such as mentions in newspapers of the different historical periods, book reviews or studies about the work and its translation etc. are examined apart from the publication dates of the different translations. This methodology obeys the contextual perspective of this volume. In addition, following a systemic perspective, the relationship between the original source text and its different translations over time is considered to be a reciprocal one. This circular relationship between the original and the translated text helps us to understand the reception or appreciation of authors, their work and even their culture. In this chapter investigating the editions of the thirty-one Spanish translations of Kafka s Die Verwandlung, I will start with a contextual focus analysing the evolution or history of the translations in order to proceed to a systemic focus analysing the reciprocal influence of this particular work.
