Feminismo en el Islam

A lo largo de Oriente Medio, un sentimiento feminista está creciendo entre aquellas personas que buscan reclamar la religión islámica y el Corán, para llevar a cabo una reinterpretación acorde con el contexto social, cultural y político actual. Durante décadas, existía el pensamiento entre los musulmanes de que debían elegir entre su identidad musulmana y su creencia en la igualdad de sexo; para muchos fue una elección imposible que involucraba bien una traición a su religión o a su conciencia moral. No obstante, en el último siglo, acentuado por el proceso de la descolonización, la identidad musulmana se alejó aún más de sus orígenes, creando un sistema sociocultural rígido y irrespetuoso de cualquier derecho de la mujer a través de una ola de supuesta “re-Islamización”. Esto fue la iniciativa que requerían las mujeres para transformar su sentimiento de injusticia y traición en un verdadero movimiento social. Tras el éxito obtenido a través de varios logros en el campo jurídico y social, generaciones de mujeres educadas y políticamente activas están asegurándose una plaza en la nueva realidad social de Oriente Medio. El concepto de feminismo islámico está desafiando los paradigmas existentes y demostrando a las mujeres que no ha sido el Corán que les ha transformado en el sector sumiso de la sociedad, sino las interpretaciones machistas históricas que ha hecho esto; de ahí esta propuesta de reinterpretación coránica: el verdadero deseo de Alá era una complementariedad de sexos, no una dominación de uno por encima del otro. En consecuencia, el pensamiento femenino islámico está construyendo una nueva realidad social para las mujeres dentro de los confines de su religión para ofrecerles la posibilidad de mejorar su condición social sin necesidad de rechazar sus creencias, tradiciones y en cierto modo, identidad musulmana.

A feminist sentiment is sweeping through the Middle East, growing in the minds of those who wish to reclaim Islam and the Quran, to develop a reinterpretation adequate to the current social, cultural and political context. For decades the common idea among Muslims has been that they must choose between their religious identity and their belief in gender equality; for many this was an impossible choice that involved betraying either their religion or their moral conscience. However, over the course of the last century, accentuated by the decolonisation process, this Muslim identity has distanced itself even further from its origins, creating a rigid sociocultural system, completely disregarding of any women’s rights through a supposed wave of “re-Islamisation”. This would be just the initiative that Muslim women needed to transform their sentiments of injustice and betrayal into a veritable social movement. Following various successes obtained in the legal and social fields, generations of educated and politically conscious women are claiming a place for themselves in the new Middle Eastern reality. The concept of Islamic Feminism is challenging the existent paradigms and proving to Muslim women throughout the region that it was not the Quran that turned them into the submissive sector of the society, but the historically sexist interpretations made by men that created this situation; hence, this proposal of a Quranic reinterpretation: Allah’s true wish was never a domination of one sex over the other, but a complementarity between the sexes. In consequence, Islamic Feminist thought is constructing a new reality for women within the confines of their religion, to offer them the possibility of improving their social condition without having to reject their beliefs, traditions, or to a certain extent, their Muslim identity.
