Análisis de dispositivos wearable para menores desde un punto de vista de privacidad y seguridad

El Trabajo de Fin de Máster recogido en esta memoria ha sido desarrollado en el marco del proyecto H2020 RAYUELA (empoweRing and educAting YoUng pEople for the internet by PLAying), cuyo trabajo de investigación sobre la seguridad y privacidad en dispositivos IoT ha dado lugar a la publicación de un artículo en las Jornadas Nacionales de Investigación en Ciberseguridad (JNIC) en junio de 2021 y ha servido como base del desarrollo del presente proyecto.
En este contexto, el objetivo del TFM es elaborar un estudio global de la seguridad y privacidad de dispositivos wearable utilizados por menores, combinando el análisis de seguridad de las vulnerabilidades de estos dispositivos junto con un estudio de sus garantías y características de privacidad. La elaboración de dicho estudio se ha llevado a cabo en tres fases diferenciadas, cuyo desarrollo y resultados se sintetizan en este resumen.
En la primera fase se ha realizado un estudio del estado del arte de la seguridad y la privacidad en dispositivos wearable, así como de la privacidad de aplicaciones utilizadas por menores. Este estudio ha permitido identificar los principales problemas de seguridad presentes en estas tecnologías, sirviendo como inspiración para la determinación de los objetivos del proyecto y las hipótesis iniciales que han establecido las líneas de investigación del mismo.
Durante la segunda fase del trabajo, y en base a los resultados obtenidos en la investigación llevada a cabo en la primera fase, se ha realizado un estudio del mercado actual de dispositivos wearable con el fin de seleccionar los dispositivos objeto del análisis llevado a cabo en la tercera fase. Se ha realizado así mismo un análisis de riesgos y amenazas, definiendo un escenario representativo del uso de un dispositivo wearable con el fin de guiar el diseño de las pruebas realizadas en la siguiente etapa del proyecto.
Por último, el análisis de riesgos y amenazas llevado a cabo en la segunda etapa, ha servido para diseñar el escenario de pruebas y definir la metodología de análisis de los dispositivos seleccionados. Dicho análisis se ha llevado a cabo en la tercera y última fase del proyecto, y sus resultados indican que, aunque hay intención por parte algunas marcas por garantizar la seguridad y privacidad de sus dispositivos, existen vulnerabilidades importantes en sus productos que pueden permitir a un atacante identificar,

The Master’s Thesis included in this report has been developed within the framework of the H2020 project RAYUELA (empoweRing and educAting YoUng pEople for the internet by PLAying), whose research work on security and privacy in IoT devices has led to the publication of an article in the JornadasNacionales de Investigación en Ciberseguridad (JNIC) in June 2021 and has served as the basis for the development of this project.
In this context, the objective of the TFM is to elaborate a global study of the security and privacy of wearable devices used by minors, combining the security analysis of the vulnerabilities of these devices together with a study of their privacy guarantees and characteristics. The study was carried out in three distinct phases, the development and results of which are summarized in this abstract.
In the first phase, a study was made of the state of the art of security and privacy in wearable devices, as well as the privacy of applications used by minors. This study has allowed for the identification of the main security problems present in these technologies, serving as inspiration for the determination of the project objectives and the initial hypotheses that have established the lines of research of the project.
During the second phase of the work, and based on the results obtained in the research of the first phase, a study of the current market of wearable devices has been carried out in order to select the target devices for the analysis phase. A risk and threat analysis was also conducted, defining a representative scenario of the use of a wearable device in order to guide the design of the tests performed in the next stage of the project.
Finally, the risk and threat analysis conducted in the second stage was used to design the test scenario and define the analysis methodology for the selected devices. This analysis was carried out in the third and last phase of the project, and its results indicate that, although there is an intention on the part of some brands to guarantee the security and privacy of their devices, there are important vulnerabilities in their products that can allow an attacker to identify, track or impersonate a device or user.
