THE US-MEXICO RELATIONSHIP IN THE 21ST CENTURY. FRIENDS OR JUST NEIGHBORS?

El propósito de este trabajo es analizar y evaluar las relaciones entre dos de los países más importantes del mundo, quienes además comparten una de las fronteras más problemáticas de todo el planeta. Muchos presidentes de diferentes partidos políticos de ambos lados se han enfrentado a este problema en el siglo XXI. ¿Construyeron fuertes lazos entre ambos países? ¿Fueron estos lazos lo suficientemente fuertes como para atravesar algunas de las mayores tensiones? ¿Sus diferentes personalidades afectaron toda la relación? En este trabajo analizaré las relaciones entre estos dos países, enfocándome en algunos de los temas más importantes como sus políticas comerciales, sus desacuerdos económicos y las tensiones fronterizas, así como también los desafíos que deberá enfrentar esta relación bilateral de cara al futuro más cercano en el contexto de los eventos actuales.

The purpose of this work is to analyze and evaluate the relations between two of the most important countries in the world, who also share one of the most problematic borders of the whole planet. Many Presidents of different political parties from both sides have faced this issue in the 21st century. Did they build strong ties between both countries? Were these ties strong enough to go through some of the biggest tensions? Did their different personalities affect the whole relationship? In this work, I will analyze the relations between these two countries, focusing on some of the most important issues such as their trade politics, their economic disagreements, and the border’s tensions, as well as evaluate the challenges that this bilateral relationship will have to face in the nearest future in the context of the current events.
