En sus obras, Kate Chopin y Edith Wharton nos hacen ver distintas facetas de la vida de una mujer casada a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX en EE. UU. Se podría decir que sus novelas (El despertar y La casa de la alegría, respectivamente) son distintas perspectivas de la misma situación: una de falta de libertad, entendimiento de su propio deseo y sexualidad y de expectativas sociales. Estos son temas que aparecen a menudo en lo que consideramos la literatura feminista, temas muy relevantes para el movimiento feminista en su momento, y que lo han seguido siendo a lo largo de la historia. Sin embargo, el movimiento está en un constante estado de cambio, adaptándose a los tiempos y avances que se consiguen.
